STUDIO WORK VS WORLD BOOK DAY COSTUME, CONTINUED

I was truly relieved to have finished my Unit 1 assignment and excited to get back to the studio after half term and finally do some experimentation with writing on Triptich fridge doors and conduct some irridescent acrylic tests. I managed to prep the surfaces , which were actually foams so probably not the best choice but I decided they were the right colour so wanted to try them before I actually moving onto fridge doors.

I have a feeling the foam actually soaked the clear medium in completely, whereas the white gesso is clearly stuck on top of the white foam. I also tried the 2 variations of irridescent paint: the Liquitex vs the Golden. The Golden was actually very easy to spread out with the sponge brush and the result was nice and transparent, Whereas the Liquitex was very dense and I had to add the pouring medium to achieve an effect similar to the Golden irridescent

I had to stop with the experiment to pick up the kids from school and immerse myself in the World Book Day Absolute Best Costume making duties. Vecna(I know it’s not a book) was the choice as we already had a costume from 2 years ago and we got very excited about making the face with veins. The funny thing is it feels just as fun and experimental to be doing these projects with my son as when I’m experimenting in my studio. Maybe it even feels more freeing and relaxed as it’s not considered “serious art”. But maybe that is the best kind of art, the not-serious one? We had no idea what to use for the veins and ended up trying the airdry foam, which turned out to be a great medium for creating the wobbly veins. We also used gluegun to create the smaller veins on the face and we’ll probably use modelling baloons for the bigger movable tentacles around the arms and torso. So far so good

The studio experimentation project seems to be going very slowly, I am currently mostly focused on getting the right materials to conduct proper tests on actual fridge doors, painting various layers and waiting for them to dry. I am recording the process, I have currently managed to create the 75% pouring Liquitex Medium, 25% liquitex irridescent gold paint and 5% flow and started laying on the first layers of that. It is definitely more subtle and I like the additional sheer sheen that comes from the gloss pouring medium

On another note, the Vecna costume is going unexpectedly well, the colour we chose for painting turned out great and the final addition of the purple metallic on the face looks perfect. Had to add extra clay to the back of the head to extend it and had to go back to hobbycraft for extra clay for the hands and feet but the result is going to be unbelievable, my son is super excited. The bad news is he will only get to wear it for 30 mins, but maybe that’s how he’ll embrace it the most
