I really enjoy this new I discovered through making a mistake. I was supposed to use sharpie on canvas board to avoid rubbing and forgot the sharpie and ended up havint to try pencil. I only had one board so I ended up drawing the model, rubbing out and drawing on top of the rubbed out drawing. I really enjoyed the deeper, imperfect structure, it almost gained another dimension and additional depth. Made me think od Michelangelo and Da Vinci unfinished sketches. So then I thought how I could explore further this celebration of the imperfections inspired by old masters techniques based on studio practice with pencil on canvas(accidental smearing and rubbing out)? I also realised that using rubber on top of multilayered pencil lines is really great for creating contrast and deep shadows.
Then another thought hit me that it’s probably not very original and millions of people are doing it already including very successful ones like Jenny Saville…but then in the words of Jim Jarmush( I am adding this on the 21.01.26) “nothing is original” “originality is non existent”
