EXHIBITION: KRYSTYNA WOJTYNA-DROUET. JA DLA SIEBIE NIE ISTNIEJE. I CEASE TO EXIST FOR MYSELF – WOVEN PAINTINGS – TAPESTRIES

An absolutely wonderful exhibition, with forms as simplified as the ones in the paintings of Rose Wylie, yet their textures and colours and the magnificent 100 year old this year persona of the artist resonated so much more with me. The colourr and textures were so extremely vibrant, the force of her hands in the documentary slamming the loom with such force a 40 year old would be jealous, the unbelievable techniques she and her sister developed for the natural dyeing of the wool, I found it absolutely mesmerising, beautiful and fascinating.

There was also magic. Magic and spirituality in the way she looks at the world, but not heavy magic filled with catholic guilt, the magic you can only find as a child walking around a forest, losing yourself in dreams and creating stories and scenarios in your head. I want to feel that kind of magic again. But how do I let myself? How do I give myself permission?

And that name, Krystyna. Same as my grandmother’s and my daughter’s middle name. There are no coincidances. The exhibition closes in a few days, I was only in Poland for 3, and I feel something magical has happened.

There was also a beautiful documentary about the artist and in a few shots her daughter was helping with the dyeing process of the wool, helping to find dyes and colours and there was something so precious and honest and a glimpse of a bond that could exist between an artist mother and her daughter
