A landmark collaboration between Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London and the NHS Tavistock Centre brings contemporary art into the heart of mental healthcare. Spectrum<\/em> transformed the NHS Tavistock Centre into a living artwork – a truly international exhibition and public programme exploring mental health, Pride, and radically inclusive care.<\/p>

Presented by the Central Saint Martins MA Fine Art: Digital cohort, the exhibition reimagines the Art Space corridor as a site of encounter: where patients, clinicians, artists and the public move through a shared spectrum of experience, identity and emotion.<\/p>

Coinciding with the Summer Solstice and Pride Month, Spectrum foregrounds themes of universal love, collective wellbeing and access to care – at a moment of increasing urgency for mental health services across the UK.<\/p>

Bringing together a diverse group of emerging artists of all walks of life and age groups, the exhibition spans digital, conceptual and interdisciplinary practices, united by a commitment to openness, dialogue and care.<\/p>

Matrescence<\/em> is a mixed-media work exploring the often invisible transformation that occurs when a woman becomes a mother.<\/p>

Created with acrylic paint, thread and stained-glass outliner on a reclaimed refrigerator door, the work depicts the bowed head of an exhausted new mother. Her hair, formed from thread embedded into wet paint, hangs heavily beneath a barrage of unsolicited advice, criticism and judgement from strangers, family members, partners and other mothers\u2014voices that often drown out the mother’s own experience.<\/p>

The title refers to matrescence<\/strong>, the profound physical, psychological, social and identity shift that accompanies becoming a mother. While society closely monitors the wellbeing of the baby, the mother’s wellbeing is frequently overlooked.<\/p>

According to NHS England, up to one in five women experiences a mental health condition during pregnancy or in the first year after birth<\/strong>, including anxiety, depression and other perinatal mental health difficulties. Yet many mothers continue to struggle in silence.<\/p>

Rather than offering answers, Matrescence<\/em> asks a simple question:<\/p>

Before we advise, compare, correct or judge, have we stopped to ask how the mother is doing?<\/strong><\/p>

Presented within an NHS setting, the work is both an artwork and a call for awareness. It invites viewers to recognise matrescence as a significant life transition and to replace judgement with attention, listening and care.<\/p>
